Xi Zhao

Xi Zhao is an Associate Professor in Chinese Antarctic Center of Surveying and Mapping at Wuhan University, where she has been since 2012. Xi will be residing at PSC, collaborating with Jinlun Zhang, through late 2018 -2019. She received her Ph.D. in earth observation science from the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Supervised by Prof. Alfred Stein, Xi’s PhD research addressed spatial and spatio-temporal uncertainty by random sets, with applications in vegetation and flood level monitoring at various scale levels. After her PhD research, she worked on remote sensing and uncertainty of the polar sea ice.

Xi won the James Smith Medal for 2018, awarded by the International Spatial Accuracy Research Association, for her achievement as a junior scientist. She also served as a guest editor for Spatial Statistics’ special issue, Regional Economy and Development: A Viewpoint and Application of Spatial Statistics, in 2017, and was a keynote speaker at the Spatial Statistics Conference in 2015, and again in 2018. Xi has also published 46 peer-reviewed papers, among which 24 are SCI/EI indexed.

Xi’s research interests include sea ice remote sensing, uncertainty modeling, and data quality analysis of remote sensing images. Her recent studies focus on marginal ice zone dynamics (both Arctic and Antarctic), the thin ice thickness retrieval and polynya monitoring (Ross Sea/Antarctic), along with ice leads detection (Beaufort Sea/Arctic). During her stay at the Polar Science Center, Xi expects to learn from our team of scientists and researchers, cooperate closely with sea ice modelers and remote sensing experts, and make enhanced efforts to bring a fruitful future.
