Ethan Campbell

Ethan C. Campbell is an oceanographer studying Antarctic ocean, sea ice, and snow physics. His research focuses on how storm and snowfall events affect heat and freshwater fluxes in the ice-covered Southern Ocean. Dr. Campbell is an NSF Office of Polar Programs Postdoctoral Fellow (2025–2026) and a Washington Research Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow (starting in Oct. 2025). He is currently working with Drs. Melinda Webster and Edward Blanchard-Wrigglesworth. Dr. Campbell received his PhD in physical oceanography from the University of Washington’s School of Oceanography, where he was advised by Prof. Stephen Riser. His doctoral research encompassed efforts to investigate the formation of open-ocean polynyas in the Weddell Sea, reconstruct Antarctic sea ice growth and melt using ocean measurements, and constrain snow-on-sea-ice processes using a Lagrangian modeling approach. His interests also include promoting reproducible and open science, advancing evidence-based teaching practices, and fostering diverse and inclusive spaces within academic institutions.
