Andy Heiberg

Andy HeibergAndreas Heiberg (Andy) provides logistics support for arctic and antarctic research programs sponsored primarily by the Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation. To support research projects involving field work, Andy conducts detailed planning and scheduling, and organizes and oversees procurement of equipment and contracting for resoucrces including aircraft, ships and personnel. In the field he directs the setup of facilities, and schedules and manages the support resources. One of his larger logistics challenges was the “Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean” (SHEBA) project during 1997-98. The SHEBA main field station was a ship frozen into the drifting pack ice for 1 year, surrounded by manned and automatic subsidiary stations at horizontal distances ranging from 10m to 100km. Measurements made at the SHEBA stations document the interactions of the atmosphere, ocean and sea-ice as they affect the surface heat budget of the Arctic Ocean.

Since 1999 Andy has managed the logistics of the ongoing “North Pole Environmental Observatory” (NPEO) project. The objective of NPEO is to track changes in the world’s northernmost ocean over time, and to learn how these changes affect the globe. A springtime NPEO research camp has been established near the North Pole each April 2000-2010, using the runway and other facilities at the Russian ice station “Barneo”. NPEO is staffed by an international research team, with primary support from the U.S. National Science Foundation.

In 1992, Andy received a Meritorious Public Service Award from the Office of the Chief of Naval Research in honor of his 20 years of service in support of arctic research. In 1999 he received the National Science Foundation Arctic Service Award for his contributions to SHEBA. Andy has an engineering degree from the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland. He joined the University of Washington in 1971.
